Karthik Pasupulate revisits the many faces of Venkatesh He is probably the least celebrated of the famous quartet of Telugu superstars that ruled for over two decades. The name Venkatesh might not evoke the same frenzy as a Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna or a Nagarjuna, but with seven Nandi awards, four Filmfare awards besides a host of other such honours, he clearly has a way with the audiences.

Down south, people have a proclivity for hyperbole. It is a tendency that is reflected in titles we bestow upon our reigning film stars.

Honorifics like Vishwavikhyatha natasaravabhauma NTR, Natasamrat ANR, Nata Bhushana Sobhan Babu, Rebel Star Krishnam Raju, Megastar Chiranjeevi, Collection King Mohan Babu, Yuvasamrat Nagarjuna, Yuvaratna Balakrishna... give a glimpse of our penchant for the superlative. Victory Venkatesh then seems like a pretty toned down expression of that kind of worship.

Perhaps Venky would not have it any other way. The deeply spiritual person that he is, he might just say what's in a name? He is the sort of guy who would rather let his work do all the talking. His caliber as an actor was never in doubt. His mature debut as the south's very own angry young man in K Raghavernder Rao's Kaliyuga Pandavulu won him many accolades. Not one to be tied down to an image, Venkatesh has constantly reinvented himself over the years. Another great year was 1992. It was the year Chanti released. It proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year, and was even dubbed in Hindi as the Karisma Kapoor starrer Anari. It was around this time that he started experimenting with familyoriented films like Chinnarayudu.

Not so flattering for his angry young man days but Venky had come a long way since then. ‘Rocket Singh…’ to be screened at Dubai film fest

YashRaj Films’ Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year, slated for Dec 11 release in India, has been selected to be screened at the 6th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).

The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and helmed by Chak De! India director Shimit Amin, will be part of the Indian cinema section in Out of Competition DIFF programme.

"Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year" is the story of a graduate trying to find a balance between the demands of the professional life and his love life.

Director Siddharth Anand is excited about shooting Christmas celebrations in a restricted area of New York City with Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor for his film Anjana Anjanai. And he hopes it will snow when he cans the scenes.

in New York would fall flat. "Yeah, we’re praying for a white Christmas in New York," said Anand.

Emraan Hashmi is all set to change his serial kisser image with his upcoming film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai - he will flaunt six-pack abs and will be seen challenging an underworld don.

Director Milan Luthria says that he purposely wanted to give Emraan this look.

"Emraan has always been the underdog and his character is that of a rebel, a dark horse. I wanted to break his serial kisser image and add shock value to the film," said Luthria.

"I chose Emraan and then styled him this way as it was extremely difficult to find a youngster who in levels of intensity could be equal and at same time opposite to that of Ajay Devgn."

The film is based on the Mumbai underworld of the seventies and Emraan’s character challenges the underworld don, played by Ajay.

"The role in the film demanded a look like this. It’s not just about the six packs, my character had to look physically tough. It was one of the key requirements of the script," Emraan told IANS.

The actor, who has done hit films like Murder, Kalyug, Jannat and Raaz - The Mystery Continues, underwent rigorous training and followed a strict diet regime to obtain the sculpted body.

Emraan was given Angular training method and the training period was divided into blocks of 10 days.

The actor was advised to have five-six meals a day and followed guidelines like consuming fats, which were four and five grams of fish oil for fat loss, walnuts and almonds, carb manipulation for losing fat and maintaining muscle mass and protein intake.

Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan went for six-pack for Om Shanti Om and Ghajini respectively. Shahid Kapoor is doing two better — he will show off eight-pack abs in his forthcoming film Chance Pe Dance.

Once Upon A Time… also stars Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai and is expected to hit screens in June next year.

India is the guest of honour at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), which opened here with the screening of John Abraham-Katrina Kaif starrer Hindi film New York.

The festival was jointly inaugurated by the Egyptian Minister of Culture, H E Farouk Hosni and Indian Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Raghu Menon, last night.

Around 25 Indian films will be screened during the 10-day-long festival, which will also organise a retrospective of the films by Indian director Madhur Bhandarkar.

More than 30 leading Indian films personalities are expected to grace the festival red carpet.

Some of the big names being legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who is also the chairperson of the international jury, actress Sridevi and her producer husband Boney Kapoor, director Madhur Bhandarkar, Slumdog Millionaire star Irrfan Khan and writer Vikas Swarup, Kabir Khan, Jai Tank and Krishna Seshadri Gomatam.(PTI)

Mallika Sherwat, who’s apparently hobnobbing with the Hollywood crowd, is all set to star in a film based on the US President Barack Obama’s political campaign.

The film by Doug McHenry is a romantic, political comedy titled Love, Barack. The film tracks the romance between a Democratic campaign volunteer and her Republican counterpart in the run-up to last year’s US Presidential election. The principal photography for the film will kick off in Los Angeles on January 13.

The movie will be produced by Govind Menon and William Keenan’s US-India consultancy and production company Nuclear Mango. The same producers oversaw the post production of Jennifer Lynch’s Hisss starring Mallika.

Mallika’s character (as reported earlier by The Mumbai Age) Aretha Gupta is based on Kamala Harris, the attorney general of San Francisco.

The actress is now working hard to acquire a thick American accent for her role in the film, which has an all-American cast. Mallika has already worked on other international projects including Jackie Chan’s Myth.

Slumdog Millionaire has not yet finished its victorious run at award ceremonies as the Mumbai-based potboiler has picked up five nods at the 2009 European Film Awards.

While British director Danny Boyle has been nominated for the award of ’Best European Director’, Dev Patel has been nominated to receive ’Best European Actor’ prize, reported Ace Showbiz online.

The rags-to-riches film which won eight Academy Awards this year has also been nominated in ’Best European Film’, ’Best European Screenwriter’ and ’Best European Cinematographer’ categories. Competing with Slumdog Millionaire in the five categories is Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet, which leads the pack with six nominations.

At the same event, Penelope Cruz is nominated for ’Best European Actress’ for her role in Broken Embraces and her competition includes Kate Winslet in The Reader, and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist.

The winner of the 22nd European Film Awards will be announced at a gala night, which is going to be held on December 12 in Bochum, Germany.

Michael Jackson`S Brothers Are To Debut A New Reality Television Show

Michael Jackson`s brothers are to debut a new reality television show starting in December, E Online reported Friday.

The entertainment news site said that Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy Jackson would star in the show, which will be screened on the cable channel A&E.

Filming, which focuses on the siblings and their respective families, actually began nearly a year ago but was shelved after Michael scuttled a proposed Jacksons` reunion concert. However, interest grew after the singer`s shocking death in June and the series will include the family`s reactions to Michael`s passing.

The reality show is only one of several TV projects in the works. Sister Janet has granted her first TV interview since Jackson`s death, which will air on ABC Nov 18.

The late singer himself is also touted to "appear" on a live seance to be broadcast over British network Sky 1.

Katrina Kaif, who has two releases in November, has made her preference clear. While she is still to commit dates for the promotion of De Dana Dan in which she stars opposite Akshay Kumar, she is going out on a limb to promote her other November release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. According to sources, Katrina is quite kicked about the the Raj Kumar Santoshi film.

For the last three days, Katrina has been actively doing interviews in Mumbai and Kolkata and is even scheduled to fly to New Delhi, where she will do as many as five events in one day to for the promotion of Ajab Prem… Naturally, there is a feeling that she is being more partial to her film opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The actress and Ranbir are even expected to walk the ramp at the Fashion Week in Delhi as part of the film’s promotion.

Katrina is not amused with allegations that she prefers one movie of hers over the other and says, "There is a gap of 20 days between the release of both the films. And of course I agree that my next nine days will go in actively promoting Ajab Prem…because it’s releasing in the first week of November whereas De Dana Dan will release in the last week of November."

Kat explains that as far as her work goes, she will never compromise. "I don’t know where this question of my being partial to one film over the other is coming from," she says.

She says that the only reason why she has not allotted dates for the promotion of De Dana Dan is because she is waiting for Akshay to return from Baramati before she joins the publicity campaign. "Besides De Dana Dan has an ensemble cast. I will promote the film with the rest of them. In the case of Ajab Prem…, Ranbir has been shooting in Bhopal till October 27 and so I have had to go and do my own bit for the film. It may therefore appear like I’m being partial, but that’s incorrect," she adds.

Katrina says, "I did Blue and De Dana Dan because Akshay asked me to. He is someone who stood by me through the initial phase of my struggle and I have therefore done these films at his request. When someone like Akki asks me for something, I would do it with my eyes closed because it is important to me.’’

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar’s Hindi remake of "Stepmom" will be shot in Sydney and will create 200 jobs for people in the Australian city, said Virginia Judge, minister assisting the Premier on the Arts.

"This movie will take Sydney to Bollywood and an audience of more than one billion people. This is the first Australian production from one of Bollywood’s most iconic filmmakers Karan Johar," said Judge Tuesday in a press statement.

To be directed by Siddharth Malhotra, the film is inspired by director Chris Columbus’ 1998 hit drama "Stepmom", a heartwarming tale of two women – divorced Susan Sarandon and the new woman (Julia Roberts) in her ex-husband’s life – and the problems they face to find a common ground of understanding.

"We are excited to showcase the very best that Australia has to offer and we hope to bring back some of the infectious spirit and charm that has become synonymous with Australia and Australians," said Karan, who is producing it under his banner Dhama Productions.

The Hindi remake stars Kareena kapoor and Kajol and it will be extensively shot in Sydney.

"A film-friendly place with the best locales worldwide all in one city and suited to the requirements of my script. Besides, one needs to work with good people so what better place than Sydney," said Malhotra.

Dharma has hired Sydney-based TEMPLE as the Australian production company.

"Karan Johar is India’s iconic filmmaker and represents the modern professional brand of Indian cinema. Mumbai, Shahid Kapoor’s “Paathshala”, which has been ready for the last one year, will finally hit screens next year and the actor says his role is substantial even though it is not long enough.

“‘Paathshala’ is small in comparison to some other films that I am doing. Moreover, I not a quintessential hero in the film. However, it isn’t as if I have a special appearance in the film, as has been speculated by some. I have a substantial role that lasts for 30-40 minutes in the film,” Shahid, who had two releases — “Kaminey” and “Dil Bole Hadippa” this year –, told IANS.

“Paathshala” was earlier being co-produced by choreographer-turned-filmmaker Ahmed Khan with Big Pictures. However, as per current developments, Eros International would be presenting the film.

The first look of the film was revealed a year ago with “Karzzzz”. It was expected that the film would release in January 2009, but it continued to move ahead. Directed by award-winning Marathi film director Milind Ukey, “Paatshala” is expected to release in the first half of 2010.

“Yes, the film moved from Big Pictures to Eros and they would be making plans to line up the film in a proper manner. However, I am sure they would have the right campaign in place for the film’s release. The film has to be protected and released when there is no other film of mine coming up,” said Shahid, who plays a teacher in it.

The film brings together Ayesha Takia with Shahid after “Dil Maange More” and “Fool-N-Final”. Incidentally, the two had worked together years ago as child artists in the famous commercial for the health drink Complan.

The film also stars Nana Patekar along with child artists Swini Khara, Ali Haji and Dwij Yadav.

Set against the Indian education system, “Paathshala” deals with contemporary and socially relevant issues regarding children. It claims to carry a heartfelt message for children, parents and teachers.

“It’s a very socially relevant film and talks about the education system in the country. I am really happy to have played a role in it. I have seen the rushes of the film and really cried throughout. I get really emotional when watching a film. Even during ‘Taare Zameen Par’, I cried throughout and was looking around me if anyone was watching me,” he said.

Unlike “Taare Zameen Par”, which was shot on real locations, “Paathshala” was filmed on a set. To give it an authentic look, Khan had erected a massive set of a school at Film City — it consisted of class rooms, dormitories, principal’s cabin, staff rooms, half a dozen huge corridors, basket ball court, garden, assembly hall, music room and canteen.
